Joseph Arnold

After a two-year battle with lung cancer, Joseph J. ‘Joe’ Arnold passed away peacefully at Enso House hospice in Freeland March 31, 2005. He was born Jan. 18, 1925.

He is survived by his wife, Trevor L. Arnold of Greenbank; his children Diane Arnold, Gail Arnold, Douglas Arnold and Eric Arnold and step-children Michael (Christine) Franz, Tracey (Tom) Hanson and Kris McMullen and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Dorothy Anderson and Jane (Bud) Wirth, along with several nieces and nephews as well as his faithful puppy, Hei You.

Prior to his relocating to Whidbey Island in 1994, he had been a long-time resident of Camden and Burlington counties in New Jersey. He graduated from Moorestown High School and the University of Notre Dame. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945 as a belly gunner in the 19th Bomber Squadron.

Joe produced sports films featured on NBC’s Wide World of Sports while employed by Tel-Ra Productions of Philadelphia before established Arnold Pictures in Riverton, N.J. There he produced his short subject “Worth Running For” that was nominated for an Academy Award in documentary subjects and opened in Radio City Music Hall.

Joe was an avid golfer and a long-time member of Riverton Country Club and produced many golf films for nationwide distribution. He was an active member of the International Quorum of Film Producers and traveled worldwide to confer with other members.

As a gourmet cook, he offered his talents at dinner party auctions for fundraisers to many non-profit organizations.

During Joe’s retirement years on Whidbey Island, he was active at St. Augustine’s In-The-Woods Episcopal Church, served as president of the local chapter of HOPE. His vast knowledge of wine production was shared with the many visitors to Greenbank Farm Winery where he loved his work as wine steward.

A memorial service will be held at St. Augustine’s Church, 5217 S. Honeymoon Bay Road, Freeland, at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 16. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Enso House, 6339 Wahl Road, Freeland 98249 or the American Cancer Society.
