John Pitman Carty

John Pitman Carty, 75, died peacefully at his home in Langley on Saturday, March 21.

John was preceded in death by his wife Elaine M. Carty and two daughters, Elise Jane Carty and Deborah Joy Carty.

John was born Jan. 12, 1934, in Trenton, New Jersey to Alvin John Pitman Carty, a poultry farmer, and Rachel Elizabeth (Harris) Carty, a school teacher and principal. John attended Tennessee University and served as a veteran to the United States Armed Forces in the U.S. Air Force. He enjoyed a lifelong career in construction, proudly as project manager and superintendent, consulting for a variety of projects for Howard S. Wright and John Sellen Construction. He helped in remodeling and expanding the Langley United Methodist Church. He worked on a nuclear research apparatus facility at Princeton University, Trident Submarine Base & Forrestal Research Center to Century Square and the Pacific First National Building in downtown Seattle. John also helped rebuild an orphanage in Russia.

John Carty also served the community through the South Whidbey School Board from 1979 to 1991; on the planning and construction of the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts; as Whidbey General Hospital Bond committee chairman; and through the Lions Club and several other local efforts and organizations.

Survivors include his son Craig Carty and his wife Victoria; his daughter Carolyn Joyce Carty, his son Jeff Carty and his wife Eve; his son Shawn Carty, his wife Jeanne and daughter Sarah; his son Scott Carty, his wife Kerry and children Ella and Ethan. Dona Carty, her daughter Rachel and her son Matt; many grandchildren include Anna, Erin, Noelle Carty, Rose Conklin, Anthony John Pitman Carty and greatgrandchildren.

A service was held at Langley United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Friday, April 3, to celebrate the life and contributions of John Carty.
