Jessie Mae Evans

Jessie Mae Evans died Jan. 16, 2008, at Whidbey General Hospital, Coupeville, at the age of 94. She was born in Independence, Kan., on Sept. 30, 1913, to John and Elizabeth (Hartman) Larimer.

Her family left Kansas and, in 1923, settled briefly in Yakima. After one year, they moved south to Eugene, Ore., where Jessie graduated from Eugene High School. She attended Southern California Bible College in Pasadena, receiving her diploma in 1934.

Jessie returned to Eugene. She met Donald T. Evans, and on April 9, 1944, they were married at Lighthouse Temple in Eugene. They settled in Springfield, Ore., and raised three children. Don and Jessie were pioneers in the Calvary Open Bible Church where they were active until moving to Oak Harbor in 1998. In addition to her church activities, Jessie enjoyed needlework, travel and reading. Jessie loved to cook. She was well known in her community for her fabulous bread.

Jessie Evans is survived by three children: Rebecca Evans of Beaverton, Ore., Kathleen Evans of Oak Harbor and DuWayne Evans (Donna) of Freeland; three grandchildren, Brandi Mayhugh (Adam) of Astoria, Ore., Angela Evans of Eugene and Michael Burnard of Tualatin, Ore.; and two great grandchildren, Wyatt and Olivia Mayhugh of Astoria. Her husband Donald, two sisters and one brother preceded Jessie in death.

Funeral services for Jessie Evans will be held at one 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Calvary Open Bible Church in Springfield, with internment to follow at Lane Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Eugene. Arrangements under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
