Janet Brown: June 20, 1938 – October 9th, 2022

Janet Brown (Skarberg) passed away at her home in Clinton, WA on October 9, 2022.

Janet was born in Clinton on June 20, 1938 to Gust Skarberg and Ruth (Galbreath) Skarberg. Janet lived in Clinton her entire life, 84 years, and saw many changes to the island. Janet attended grades 1 though 12 at Langley, when grades 1 through 12 were all in the same building, and graduated from Langley High School in 1956. She married her high school sweetheart, Bob Brown, in 1956 when they were blessed with a son, Ron, and later daughter Joye in 1959. They later divorced in 1975, but remained close friends throughout their lives until their respective deaths on October 9th and December 9th.

Both Bob and Janet attended Central Washington University where Janet graduated in 1966 with a BA degree in education, and started teaching primary school at Langley in 1966 where she taught second grade for 26 years, retiring in 1992. Janet lived with her partner, Dick McClellan, for 37 years until Dick’s death in 2014. She and Dick traveled to many places enjoying many cruises to various parts of the world. Although she traveled a lot, she said she never found a better place than Whidbey Island. Janet was involved in many activities during her lifetime, including holding her own on the basketball court with the boys in her youth, being the top bowler at one time at Freeland Lanes with the women’s league, and a ballroom dancer many people envied. In the 1960s and 70s, she taught Red Cross swimming lessons at Scatched Head, was involved with the Cub Scouts, and taught Bible school at St. Peters Church in Clinton.

Janet is survived by her son, Ron Brown (wife, Lori), daughter Joye Brown Veit (husband, PeeWee), of Clinton, WA, her brother, Ken Skarberg (wife, Nancy) and niece Shirley Skarberg of Gig Harbor, WA, granddaughters, Shannon Brown and Mary Brown, and four great granddaughters, Lainey, Piper, Walynn and Lenna, of Clinton, WA, along with numerous cousins. Janet was preceded in death by her niece, Shannan Skarberg, in 1977.
