Jane (Reinstra) Oakley

Jane A (Reinstra) Oakley, a lifelong resident of Oak Harbor, passed away peacefully Sept.13, 2003, at Home Place in Oak Harbor at the age of 88. She was born June 26, 1915, in Arlington, to Tjitte “Ted” Reinstra and Geessina (Dykhuzien) Reinstra.

Jane’s parents moved to Oak Harbor two weeks after her birth. Jane grew up with her six brothers and sisters on the family farm, near Cornet Bay. The log cabin home where Jane was raised stood near Soundview Shopper on Highway 20 until the last few years.

Jane married Ralph Wellington Oakley in Everett Nov. 16, 1936. She and Ralph began a 22-year farming career at their Cornet Bay home. During her early years of marriage, Jane helped start the youth camp at Cornet Bay and in 1949, helped establish the first kindergarten in Oak Harbor.

Jane and Ralph were early members of Deception Pass Boat Club and delighted in boat trips to the San Juan Islands. Jane was a long-time member of the National Grangers. After Ralph’s retirement from Civil Service, the couple enjoyed snow-birding to Yuma, Ariz., in their travel trailer.

Jane was a long-time member of Oak Harbor Emblem Club No. 450 and was voted Sister of the Year in 1988. She was also an advocate and member of Oak Harbor’s Historical Society. She volunteered for many years at the USO/YMCA with her daughter Carol. During the years following the death of her husband, Jane enjoyed trips to Reno and bingo with her daughter Beverly. She delighted in frequent family gatherings.

Jane is survived by one daughter, Beverly Reedy of Oak Harbor; one son, Ralph Oakley and his wife Gita of Wasilla, Alaska; one sister, Tina Lovelace of Mount Vernon; two brothers, Charles Reinstra of Everett and Harold Reinstra of Mount Vernon; seven grandchildren, Mike Reedy, Tony Reedy, Ron Patton, Tom Patton, and Jim Woessner, all of Oak Harbor, and Mike and Ralph Oakley of Wasilla, Alaska; and 11 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph in 1989 and by one daughter Carolyn, one stepdaughter Betty Cross; three brothers‚ Bernardus, Roy and Charles, and one sister Daisy.

In keeping with her wishes, private family graveside services will be held at Maple Leaf Cemetery with the Oak Harbor Emblem Club No. 450 officiating. Memorials may be made to the Oak Harbor Emblem Club or the Alzheimer’s Society. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
