Jane Cleveland

Jane Evelyn Cleveland, 81, died suddenly Sept. 5, 2003, at Whidbey General Hospital. She was born March 2, 1922, in El Centro, Calif., to Ralph and Johanna Augusta (Powell) Adams.

Jane was raised in Arcadia, Calif. Following graduation from high school, she went to work as a secretary for the principal of the Monrovia-Arcadia-Dougherty Consolidated School District. Jane was married to William R. Cleveland in Arcadia, Calif., on Feb. 14, 1942.

Bill was sent overseas with the U.S. Army and Jane went to work at the Union Bank of Los Angeles. Following the war, Jane left the work force to raise their son Ralph.

Jane returned to work as a library secretary for College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif., in 1959. She remained in that position until retirement in 1978. Bill also retired and in 1979, they moved to Whidbey Island, making Oak Harbor their retirement home. Jane enjoyed sewing in her spare time. She was a member of First Reformed Church of Oak Harbor.

Jane Cleveland is survived by Bill, her husband of 61 years, and by her son and his wife, Nancy of Eugene, Ore., by one grandson, William Richard Cleveland and his wife Heidi and two great-grandsons, Ryan and Jayson Cleveland, all of Strafford, N.H. She was preceded in death by her father, Ralph Adams, her mother Johanna Adams Noble and her stepfather George Noble.

No formal funeral services will be held for Mrs. Cleveland. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow. Arrangements by Burley Funeral Chapel.
