A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 29, at 3 p.m. at the Oak Harbor Lutheran for James D. Crewes, who passed away Aug. 24, 2004, at age 86.
Jim Crewes was born Oct. 24, 1917 in Butte, Montana, and spent his entire childhood there. After graduating from Butte High School, with few jobs available and no money for college, he entered the Civilian Conservation Corps and was always proud of the accomplishments and the lasting work of the CCC.
While growing up in Butte, a favorite activity was ice skating. He was so good at it that he became member of the semi-pro ice hockey team known as the Copper Kings of Butte.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and made that his lifetime career. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and was stationed at Seattle, Honolulu and Alameda, Calif. His last assignment was to Oak Harbor in 1954. After his retirement from the U.S. Navy, he opened and operated Jim’s Garage for many years. He always dreamed of returning to his beloved Montana, but with a family involved in this community, he lived the rest of his life in Oak Harbor. His many activities and affiliations included the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 97; VFW Post 7392; the Whidbey Whirlers; the North Whidbey Riding Club; the Washington State Horseman’s Association; and the Island County Sheriff’s Posse. He attended the many reunions of the USS Prince William and the survivors of the USS Wasp. He was a member of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his four daughters, Joyce Pawson of Portland, Ore., Nancy Jordan of Woodinville, and Jamie Boyer and Bonnie Fortin, both of Oak Harbor; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Whidbey Island Chapter 97, NAS Whidbey Island, P.O. Box 296, Oak Harbor, WA 98277.
