Herman O. ‘Chick’ Arnold

Herman O. ’Chick’ Arnold, of Brazil, Ind., formerly of Oak Harbor, died April 13, 2002. He had undergone surgery and developed complications from a broken hip.

He was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Knoxville, Tenn. He was a 30-year veteran of the U.S. Navy and retired in 1970 with the rate of master chief petty officer.

After entering civilian life, he went to work at Island County’s Assessor’s Office and was later elected for three terms, 1982 to 1994, to the office of assessor. He was a member of the United Methodist Church and a 42-year member of Whidbey Island Masonic Lodge No. 15 F&AM, where he was worshipful master in 1975 and served as secretary from January 1979 to November 1994.

In Brazil, Ind., he was affiliated with Knightsville Masonic Lodge No. 409 and Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Ind.

His wife, Frances, preceded him in death on Oct. 2, 2001. His brother Charlie also died earlier. He is survived by a step-son William Rankin and his wife Nadine of Brazil, Ind. and several cousins in the Knoxville, Tenn., area.

Chick and Fran Arnold were active in Oak Harbor Senior Center and Island Hospital in volunteer service programs. Chick was one of nature’s noblemen and will be sorely missed by those whose lives he touched.

Graveside services were held at Grandview Cemetery in Terre Haute, Ind., with Rev. Richard Pippin officiating with Miller Memorial in charge of arrangements.
