Herbert Yun Ming Lum

Herbert Yun Ming Lum, 75, passed away at his home at Case Farm in Oak Harbor on Nov. 27, 2006 after a battle with end stage renal disease and heart failure. Herb was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, on Oct. 26, 1931 to Charles Sun and Elsie (Chui) Lum. They lived on a small farm where the Honolulu Airport is now located.

Herb was 10 years old at the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Herb received his education at Catholic Schools in Honolulu. At the age of 15 years he entered into the Catholic Seminary. In seminary he was known as Brother Joseph. He did maintenance work and served as the cook for the priests in addition to his studies of religion, theology and the Bible. He left the religious order at the age of 28 years. Until his retirement, he worked as a general contractor building houses.

Herb entered into marriage with Adell Vasconcellos in 1969. She was widowed with seven children. Their only son Charles Lum predeceased him at the age of three years from a heart defect. After they divorced, Herb had a Locksmith business in addition to his contracting work in Waikiki for a number of years. Later he lived in Hilo and Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii before coming to Washington State in 1997.

Herb entered into marriage with Norma Case Edens in Oak Harbor Washington on Jan. 4, 2004. He enjoyed his cows and chickens, his garden, and his ever loving dog “Jaunty.” In addition to his infant son Charles, Herb was also preceded in death by his parents, a son Joseph, brothers Lawrence, William and Alfred, and a sister Mary. He leaves to mourn his wife Norma Case Edens of Oak Harbor and his three remaining sisters Esther, Ella, and Betty, all of Honolulu.

There will be no local services. Private inurnment services will be held later in Honolulu. In lieu of floral tributes, please send memorial donations to Skagit Valley Kidney Center, P.O. Box 1376 Mount Vernon, WA 98273. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of Affordable Burial & Cremation Services, P.O. Box 1322, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.
