Genevieve Edris Iwerks

Genevieve Edris Iwerks, 88, of Oak Harbor, died May 7, 2007, at Enso House near Freeland, with her son Loren at her bedside. She was born in Puyallup on Jan. 30, 1919, to Walter Smith Edris and Maude Madonna Duncan. Gen grew up in the Puyallup area and spent time in Florida. She married Darrel Loren Iwerks on August 20, 1950, at North Broadway Methodist Church in Seattle.

Her husband Darrel was a minister of the United Methodist Church, Pacific Northwest Conference, and they lived in Seattle, Oak Harbor, Connell, Wash., Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and then Selah, Wash., prior to retirement in 1978. Darrel was then offered a circuit pastorate in Cumbria (northern England) which they accepted and then moved to Cleator Moor, Cumbria, England, for one year before returning to live in the home that they built on Penn Cove near Coupeville.

In addition to her duties as minister’s wife and mother, she worked as a librarian for the Selah School District during their tenure in that location.

Genevieve was active in the First United Methodist Church of Oak Harbor, the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Whidbey Island Genealogical Searchers, as well as enjoying playing cards with various bridge groups in the area.

Here long time interest in genealogy and her love of travel had led her to making many trips across the U.S. and Europe to conduct research of her family as well as of her husband’s. She left behind a manuscript for a book on the genealogy of the Edris family in America and her family is currently examining ways of formatting and publishing this book.

Genevieve loved to travel to new locations and over the course of her life had visited most of the United States, Canada, the Holy Land, much of Europe, the United Kingdom, as well as Hong Kong and China. Her most recent travel in 2003 took her back to the United Kingdom to visit friends made while she and her husband lived there in the Lake District in northern England in the late 1980s. Many of these friends made the journey to the United States and to Whidbey Island to visit them at their home on Penn Cove.

She is survived by her son Loren Darrel Iwerks who currently resides in the house that they built near Coupeville, as well as her grandchildren Ian Iwerks, Aaron Iwerks, and Leslie (Iwerks) French in the Tacoma area.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at the First United Methodist Church in Oak Harbor.
