Fred Way “Papa” Hoover, 90, a 23-year resident of Oak Harbor, died at Regency on Whidbey Harbor Care on August 31, 2005.
Mr. Hoover was born Sept. 8, 1914, in Muskogee, Olka. He played center for the University of Oklahoma Sooners football team, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He served as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943-1946.
On Valentine’s Day, 1948, Fred married Virginia Reber. He was employed by Crane Packing and Machine Co. in the Oklahoma oil fields until his retirement in 1982. The Hoovers then moved to Oak Harbor, where they lived in the Mariner’s Cove community.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife Virginia on Dec. 13, 2004. He also leaves a number of friends, including the devoted staff of Regency on Whidbey Harbor Care, who affectionately knew him as “Papa.” In keeping with his wishes, no formal funeral services will be held. Cremation will take place, followed by private family inurnment. Arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel.
