Florence Johnson

A memorial service for Florence Johnson will be held at the Oak Harbor Lutheran Church, Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jerry Buss officiating.

Florence Lillian Ashbrook Johnson, 90, died at Careage of Whidbey on March 23, 2002. She was born in Northwich, England, on Feb. 10, 1912, to John and Ethel (Drinkwater) Ashbrook; she was the oldest of six children.

Following high school, Florence graduated from nursing school in 1934, receiving her registered nurse certification. She worked in pediatrics for a time. With the start of World War II, she joined the British Army Nursing Corps, achieving the rank of major. She spent much of the war in New Delhi, India.

Florence immigrated to the United States following the war. She achieved American certification as a registered nurse and began work as an operating room nurse at Hibbing General Hospital, Hibbing, Minn.

While in Hibbing, she met and eventually married Oscar Johnson, a grocery man, in February of 1953. Oscar died in December of 1978. In September of 1981, she left Minnesota and moved to Oak Harbor to be near her sister. She moved to Harbor Towers in 1998 and to Careage of Whidbey in 2000.

Florence was a member of Oak Harbor Lutheran Church and the Oak Harbor Senior Center. She loved to travel.

Florence is survived by three sisters: May Mayho and Hilda Edgely, both of Northwich, England, and Joyce Adams (Glenn) of Oak Harbor and by one niece, June Price Price and one nephew, David Price, both of Dursley, Gloucester, England.
