Elsie Cope

Elsie Mae Cope passed away peacefully April 10, 2005 at Careage of Whidbey. She was born in Columbus, Ohio, on May 31, 1924, to Philip and Marjorie Blazer.

Elsie graduated from West High School where her interests were singing, dancing and boys. She met Cecil Cope in 1935 and after an eight-year courtship, they were married at Hill Top Church of Christ in Columbus. Mr. and Mrs. Cope went on to have four sons.

Elsie liked the occasional change of scenery, so the family moved back and forth between Ohio, Florida, California, Georgia and Colorado and with a final move to Coupeville in October 2001.

Elsie enjoyed the company of her friends, her church in Columbus and working woodcrafts with her husband.

Elsie is survived by her husband, Cecil “Jack” Cope at the family home, Coupeville; by sons Gary Cope, Sr. of Pataskala, Ohio, Steve Cope and wife Barbara of Coupeville, Christopher Cope of Albuquerque, N.M, and Richard Cope of Edmonds; two grandsons, Gary Cope, Jr. and wife Amie of Pataskala, Ohio, and Steve Cope, Jr. and wife Vanessa of Coupeville; and one great-grandson, Steven Cope III of Coupeville.

Private graveside services will be held at Sunnyside Cemetery Thursday, April 14, with Rev. Dr. Mary Boyd of the Coupeville United Methodist Church officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
