Elizabeth Anna (Kranker) Carknard

Elizabeth Anna (Kranker) Carknard was born Jan. 24, 1915, to George and Anna Kranker in New York City. She died peacefully Dec. 7, 2004, at Careage of Whidbey, Coupeville.

Elizabeth’s parents traveled to the United States in 1898 from Austria. There were many stories about Ellis Island and how they began their life in New York City, from George being a waiter and Anna a seamstress. They later had a building company and built homes on Long Island.

Elizabeth graduated from Bryant High School and went on to secretarial school. She married Howard Thor Rosquist in 1937 and they lived in Astoria, N.Y. Howard and son Thor passed away suddenly. Elizabeth married Edward Carknard in December 1967 and they lived in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., until Ed retired a second time. They moved to Orlando, Fla., and enjoyed the warm sun and had a wonderful marriage.

Ed passed away in 1988 and Elizabeth decided to travel and see all she could. She enjoyed making beautiful baskets and doing ceramics, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and traveling with her senior friends all over Florida. Her baskets were used in her granddaughters wedding for the bridesmaids.

Elizabeth moved to Oak Harbor in March 2003 and lived with her daughter and son-in-law. She was not exactly fond of the cold weather but did enjoy the scenery and seeing the deer.

Elizabeth will be missed by daughter Lynette Richardson and son-in-law Hal of Oak Harbor, grandchildren Christine Holbrook and husband Lee of Oak Harbor, J. Eric Smeby of Seattle and great-grandchildren, Alicia and Christopher Holbrook, both of Oak Harbor. The family will have a memorial service at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Heart Fund.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel.
