Edwin Puck

Edwin Puck died peacefully at his home in Teronda West on Whidbey Island on Aug. 27, 2007, at the age of 88.

Born on April 19, 1919, in Iowa, Ed was the youngest of six children born to Adelia and William Puck.

Ed graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1940, then earned a master’s degree from the University of Iowa. He then attended one year in the graduate program at the University of Washington.

He played professional baseball for three years in the St. Louis Cardinals organization as a pitcher.

His contract was with Houston in the old Texas League when he enlisted in the Naval Reserve and served four years during World War II, mostly in the South Pacific.

Ed met his future wife, Mary Ellen, in Seattle and they were married in August 1946. Together they raised their family in Cadron, Neb., and Marysville, Wash., where they lived until 1979 when they built a home and retired to the west side of Whidbey Island.

Ed taught physical education and coached many sports in Everett public schools from 1954 to 1956 and at Everett Community College from 1957 until his retirement in 1976.

He worked summers for five years with the Washington State Parks Department. His last assignment was at Fort Casey on Whidbey Island.

In addition to his wife Mary Ellen, Ed is survived by daughter Giane Groeschell of Seattle, son Gary and daughter-in-law Pam Puck of Chelan, and his grandson Eric Puck of Marysville. He was preceded in death by sons Russell and David.

Ed is a past member of the Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge and Whidbey Golf and Country Club.
