Doris Caruthers

Doris Caruthers, 90, died May 31, 2002, at Whidbey Island Manor, Oak Harbor. She was born Doris Maurine Kenney Aug. 31, 1911, in Chelan. Her father, Charles P. Kenney, was born in Minnesota and her mother, Rae McMillen, was born in Wisconsin. Doris moved to Twisp as a young child.

Doris was married several times. She married her first husband Paul Stalhamer Jan. 17, 1946. They were divorced and she married Henry Carl McCullough. Her second husband died after one year of marriage and she married Harless Caruthers.

She and Harless lived in Twisp. They lived in the Methow Valley for nearly 50 years, where Doris worked as a bookkeeper for the Wagner lumber mill. She became afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease and moved to Oak Harbor in 1993. The last years of her life were spent at Whidbey Island Manor in Oak Harbor.

Doris was very fond of creating ceramic art and oil paintings. She was a very generous and loving person and was deeply devoted to her family. Her mother developed cancer and Doris cared for her until her death.

She will be missed by her many friends in Oak Harbor and the Methow Valley.

Doris is survived by her nephew Marvin “Buck” Buchanan and his wife Dorothy of Oak Harbor, and by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Four sisters, Edith, Anna, Thelma and Vera, and one brother, Charley, preceded her in death.

Dorothy requested no formal funeral services be conducted. Cremation was held with private family services to follow at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Burley Funeral Chapel. This obituary is on-line at http://burley.plan4ever.com.
