David D. Holmly: September 27, 1952 – November 24, 2022

David D. Holmly passed away on November 24, 2022, at the age of 70. Dave was born in Rugby, North Dakota to Doyle and Marian (Vettrus) Holmly on September 27, 1952. He grew up in North Dakota and attended High School in Grand Forks until his family relocated to Oak Harbor for his Senior year. After graduating from Oak Harbor High School in 1970, Dave attended Skagit Valley College.

After college, Dave joined Island Title Company in Oak Harbor where he worked for 13 years, before starting his second career in mortgage banking at US Bank and later Banner Bank, where he retired in 2021. Dave served and was involved in a variety of community activities. He was a member of the Oak Harbor Rotary Club and a life member of the Navy League of the U.S. Dave was most frequently described by his friends and extended family as “just a great guy.” He enjoyed a lifetime of outings with friends and business associates, playing golf, softball, bowling — and occasionally some friendly wagering at the annual Rotary Luck ‘O The Irish event. However, in addition to his wide circle of friends, Dave’s real passion and focus was his family.

In 1980, Dave met Kari Boyer after one of his softball games. They were married June 12, 1982 at the First United Methodist Church in Oak Harbor. Son Matthew was born in 1988 and daughter Alexa in 1994. Together, the family built a lifetime of memories as they enjoyed Matt’s baseball games and golf tournaments, along with Alexa’s passions that included tennis, ice skating and hiking. As a family, they enjoyed fishing, boating, camping trips and adventures to both Seattle and Arizona for Mariner’s games. Among these and other memories, they will especially miss Dave’s singing on homemade pizza nights. Raising successful children was important to Dave. He loved his family and was so very proud of them and their accomplishments. Today, both children have established themselves in successful careers. Matt is a Software Engineer in Bellevue and Alexa is a Doctor of Physical Therapy on Whidbey Island. Dave is survived by his wife Kari, son Matt (MacKenzie) Holmly, daughter Alexa Holmly, granddaughter Josie Norine Holmly and Mila, their fourth Golden Retriever. Dave was preceded in death by his parents and brother Dan.

A celebration of Dave’s life will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2023, from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm at the Whidbey Golf Club. A memorial service will begin at 3 pm. To share memories, please visit Dave’s Book of Memories page on the Wallin-Stucky Funeral Home
