David Block

David Block, 82, of Oak Harbor, died Oct. 17, 2004, in Seattle at Sea Mar Community Care Center due to age related illness.

David was born in Mennon, Saskatchewan, Canada, Dec. 1, 1921, to Abraham Block and Agataha (Janzen) Block. He lived in Henderson, Neb., until he graduated from high school, at which time he and his best friend traveled to Oregon for their own great adventures.

David met and married Dessa Irene Hooker Nov. 24, 1941. David served his country in the U.S. Navy as a radioman during World War II. He and his family lived in Oregon until 1998, when he retired and moved to Oak Harbor. He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.

David is survived by his five children and their spouses, Barbara Saunders of Cheshire, Ore., Nancy Schaffer of Hoodsport, Melanie Block of Portland, Ore., Gerald Block of Clackamas, Ore. and Rex Block of Oak Harbor; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; also, brother Cornelius “Cornie” Block in Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dessa, May 29, 2000, thus ending a 59-year marriage. He was also preceded by his sister Zelma.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Oct. 21, at Sunnyside Cemetery, where David will be laid to rest next to his loving wife Dessa. Minister Joe Cook of Oak Harbor Church of Christ will officiate. Memorials made be made to a charity of choice. Arrangements under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
