Catherine H. VandeWerfhorst

Catherine H. VandeWerfhorst went to be with her Lord on Oct. 21, 2006 at the age of 92. She was born Oct. 25, 1913, in Ireton, Iowa, to Henry and Catrina (Boda) Vlietstra.

Catherine graduated from the Ireton Christian School in 1932. She married Frank VandeWerfhorst in Ireton on May 8, 1933. She and Frank celebrated their 73rd anniversary earlier this year.

Catherine and Frank traveled to Oak Harbor on their honeymoon to visit his parents and never returned to Iowa. She was a member of the Christian Reformed Church of Oak Harbor where she served the Lord as Sunday School teacher at the Dewey Beach Chapel, Coffee Break Bible Study leader, a member of the Ladies Aid Society and the Quilter’s Guild. She was a cancer survivor. Catherine enjoyed sewing for her family, gardening, canning and baking.

Catherine is survived by her husband Frank of Oak Harbor and by 10 children: Aldine Leistra and husband Ron of Portland, Ore.; Sylvia Kuhuski of Oak Harbor; Frances Davis Curtis and husband Les of Zillah, Wash.; Marilyn VanderGriend and husband Howard of Sully, Iowa; Eileen Hale of Gallup, N.M.; Frank VandeWerfhorst and wife Shelly of Oak Harbor; William “Bill” VandeWerfhorst, also of Oak Harbor; Patricia Michael of Yakima; and Jerry VandeWerfhorst and wife Katherine and Sharon Lusk and husband John, all of Oak Harbor. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Two brothers and one sister preceded her in death. She was a special wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother.

Memorial services for Catherine VandeWerfhorst will be held Thursday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Christian Reformed Church of Oak Harbor. Private family graveside services will proceed at Fircrest Cemetery, Oak Harbor. Visitation for family and friends will be held at Burley Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to The Back to God Hour, 6555 W.
