Betty Jean Moore, 74, of Oak Harbor, passed away on March 4, 2007, with her family by her side. She was born in Oak Harbor on July 17, 1932 to Tom and Grace (Berens) Hamming. Betty spent her early years in Oak Harbor going to school and helping out on the family farm.
Betty married Richard (Dick) Earle Moore on April 9, 1953. Their family moved to Lee, Mass., for two years, and then returned to Oak Harbor. Oak Harbor was their home, except for a few years at Treasure Island, Calif., and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, while Dick was in the United States Navy.
Betty worked for the Oak Harbor Bakery, as a cook for the Oak Harbor School District, and for Paul Bunyan Lumber. Her children and extended family were very important in her life. She always had time for the grandchildren. The door of her house was always open for visitors, and people were always welcome for a meal. She has been an active member of the Oak Harbor Christian Reformed Church during all of her years in Oak Harbor.
Betty is survived by three children: Jeff and Kay Moore of Redmond, Marlene and Jeff Clark, Ramona, Calif., and Scott Moore, Oak Harbor; six grandchildren, Lisa, Megan, and Nathan Moore, and Ryan, Jessica, and Melinda Clark; 11 brothers and sisters, Wilma Ekkelkamp of Mount Vernon, Julie Terpstra of Oak Harbor, Ken Hamming of Grand Rapids, Mich., Jack Hamming of Mount Vernon, Elmer Hamming of Oak Harbor, Harriet Maginnis of Reno, Mary Fuller of Oak Harbor, Connie Matthews of Oak Harbor, Tom Hamming, Jr., of Ontario, Calif., Gordon Hamming of Oak Harbor, and Maurice Hamming of Lafayette, Colo. Her parents, her husband Dick and son Earl Moore preceded Betty in death.
Visitation will be held at Burley Funeral Chapel on Friday, March 7, from 2 to 5 p.m. Graveside services will be held at Fircrest Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 10, followed by a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. at Oak Harbor Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Randy Beumer officiating. A reception will follow for family and friends.
