Bernard G. Granger

Bernard (Barney) G. Granger, of Coupeville, passed away at home, May 9, 2008. An avid humorist, hunter, fisherman, kayaker, and world traveler, he embarked on yet another adventure.

He was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Flint, Mich., to Joseph and Anna Granger. He graduated from GM Tech Apprenticeship School. At age 20, on his way to work at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, he turned to Bremerton instead. He entered the Navy Submarine Service during World War II, serving in the Atlantic his entire term of duty.

Returning to Seattle, he attended Burnley Art School where he met, and married, Lillian Harnish. He was employed by the Boeing Co. as a tool-and-die designer for over 30 years.

His love for outdoor adventure was unequaled and took him to places many of us can only dream of, including Alaska and Canadian backcountry, Europe, the Mediterranean, Russia, Asia, the Middle East, and (a favorite) Mongolia. He climbed Mt. Rainier at age 60. Cherished memories were archery, deer hunting the North Cascades, elk hunting near Mt. St. Helens, goose hunting at Grimes Lake and fishing at Snakelum Pt. He explored Baja, Russia and Mongolia by kayak, and paddled “Madelin’” in Kirkland to coffee. An original season-ticket holder of the Seattle Mariners, he followed the team’s ups and downs adamantly. He was an early member of Kirkland’s Cellar Art Gallery, supported Seattle Opera and loved art in general.

He was preceded in death by infant son Joe, wife Lillian (1974) and wife Marty, brother Raymond, sisters Genevieve Doyle and Patricia Blair. He is survived by brothers Larry and Robert Granger (Calif.), sister Irene Gunkel (Ill.), son Ed (Nancy) Granger (Cathlamet), daughter Louise (Leaf Schumann) Granger (Deming), grandchildren Matt (Kari) Granger (Colo.), Sean (Beth) Granger (Pasco), Jesse and Kit Schumann (OR), Amy (David) Eraut (Calif.), and great-grandchildren Sarah Elizabeth and Isaiah Jameson (Pasco).

As he wished, a small family gathering was held at the cabin. The family requests any donations be made to Friends of Home Health and Hospice of Whidbey General Hospital, 101 N. Main St., Coupeville, WA 98239. Our family thanks Sally for her loving care.
