Barbara Mary Oakland

Barbara Mary Oakland, age 92, of Coupeville, entered into the Presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011.She had been a resident of Careage of Whidbey since June of 1998.

Mrs. Oakland was born Sept. 22, 1918, in Aberdeen to Lloyd E. Flower and Jesse Pearl (Evans) Flower. Barbara was raised in Aberdeen and graduated from Aberdeen High School. She worked in the field of photography in her father’s photography studio in Aberdeen and in Seattle. She was a member of the Olympic Hiking Club, and an avid swimmer in her youth. She married Howard F. Oakland on May 3, 1941. In 1942 they settled in Seattle. Barbara dedicated her life to her husband and the raising of her four fine sons. Barbara attended the University of Washington and Seattle University. She was fond of classical violin music and loved to travel. She was a skilled artisan in needle point, crochet, latch hook rug and embroidery hand work. She excelled in bingo, tile rummy, cribbage and black velvet picture coloring. Due to failing eye sight, she enjoyed listening to audio books from the Oak Harbor Public Library.

In 1997, Howard and Barbara moved to Whidbey Island. Howard preceded her into eternity in May of 2004. She is survived by her four sons, David Forrest Oakland and wife Becky of Iowa City, Iowa, John H. Oakland, M.D. and wife Kathy of Oak Harbor, Paul Richard Oakland of Slidell, La., and Scott Peter Oakland and wife Patti of Lynnwood; five grandchildren, Brian, Michael, Angie, Andrew and Aaron; also, five great-grandchildren, Teleia, Luke, Caleb, Ashleyn and Alex. Her half-brother, John Flower, passed away in May 2011.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, 2 p.m. at Maple Leaf Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Whidbey General Hospital MAC Clinic, 101 N. Main St., Coupeville, WA 98239. Family and friends are encouraged to share memories and extend condolences at www.whidbey memorial.com.
