Attilio “Vic” Vacarro, 81, died at his Oak Harbor home on Nov. 25, 2005. Vic was born March 4, 1924, in San Francisco. He attended Balboa High School in San Francisco. He left school at age 17 and joined the U.S. Navy to fight in World War II.
Vic served as an aircraft mechanic. The Navy sent him around the world four times. His overseas assignments included Africa, Formosa, and England. Vic completed his military career at NAS Whidbey, assigned to VP-2. He retired on Aug. 1, 1963, as an ADRC (E-7) with 22 years of service.
Vic was employed for a time by Mike Branca at Mike’s Sporting Goods in Oak Harbor. He bought into the Anacortes Veneer Plant and operated a working share. When the plant sold, Vic continued working for Publishers Paper Co, the new owners, as a tugboat operator in the millpond. Eventually, failing health forced him to retire.
Vic loved the out-of-doors. His passions included fishing, hunting and trap shooting. His favorite fishing spot was the “hole” just beneath Deception Pass Bridge. For many years, he and wife Jackie traveled the West Coast, from Canada to California and Arizona, attending trap shoots.
Vic is survived by his wife Jackie at the family home; by three daughters, Shannon Deckwa and Linda Sue Zielstra of Oak Harbor and Cheryl Feverborn of Petaluma, Calif; and by three brothers, Lou Vaccaro of Fairfax, Calif; Albert Vaccaro of Grass Valley, Calif; and Joe Vaccaro of San Carlos, Calif. Nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren also survive.
At Vic’s request, no formal funeral services were conducted. Cremation was held with private family inurnment to follow. Memorials may be made to Friends of Home Health and Hospice, 101 N. Main Street, Coupeville, WA 98239. Arrangements are entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel, Oak Harbor.
