Angela McCutcheon

Angela “Angie” McCutcheon, 90, long-time Coupeville resident and wife ofthe late Bob “Mac” McCutcheon, died Oct. 11, 2002.

She was born Jan. 6, 1912 in Chicago to Joseph Calabrese and Antoinette (Fenelli) Calabrese, formerly of Naples, Italy. Her father was in the import business, bringing in such foodstuffs as cheese and cooking oils from Italy. Being in a family of five children, Angela’s life was brimming with adventure. She related stories of riding a horse, which her family owned, and playing baseball on the boys team during those early years.

When Angela was 22 years old she met and eventually married Bob McCutcheon who worked for the Chicago Sun Times. During those early years she worked in a variety of jobs but took a special interest in the hospitality arena where she worked her way to head waitress of a catering company and on to operating several restaurant businesses of her own.

In 1972, Angela and Bob decided to move from Chicago to Whidbey Island where they had visited their son Dan and his family numerous times. It was a pioneering effort, leaving several generations of family behind. Northwest living was all they had envisioned and more.

During the last eight years, Angela and her son and his wife have cruised to such places as Mexico, Europe, Africa and Alaska. With her continuing sense of adventure, even with her advanced years, Angela was looking forward to further such experiences.

Throughout her life, Angela was actively involved in her community. She was influential in organizing fund-raising for the LaRabida Sanitarium in Chicago, the first in the country to treat and find a cure for rheumatic fever. She was a lifetime member and president for a decade of the Society of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Chicago Chapter, raising funds for the needy. For the past 30 years, she has been a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Coupeville and a member of the Altar Society.

Angela endeared herself to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. She will be truly missed. She is survived by her sister, Frances Vero of Chicago; son, Dan McCutcheon and wife Pat of Oak Harbor, and children Dan McCutcheon and wife Kim of California and Michele Wolf and husband Jerry of Bellingham; daughter-in-law, Barbara McCutcheon of Chicago and children Rene Noe and husband Jack of Bolingbrook, Ill., Regina Acevedo and husband Tony of Lemont, Ill., Roberta McCutcheon of Chicago and Robert McCutcheon of Chicago; long-time caregiver and adopted daughter Delores Morris of Coupeville and husband Bill; Dr. Wylie Vracin, confidant and personal physician; 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
