Alice Emilie Case Lang Jensen died March 5, in Coupeville. Alice was born to Arthur and Mary Thode Case on May 19, 1913, at 6 p.m. on the Case Farm in Crescent Harbor. She arrived before the doctor could reach the home. Her cousin raced to the barn and said, “Uncle Arthur! Aunt Mary just had a baby girl and she has red hair!”
Alice attended schools in Oak Harbor, walking the three miles until the district started bus routes. She graduated from high school in 1931 with a class of 24 students. Alice took part in many school activities including sports, music, drama and student government.
In 1938, Alice married Frank Lang, an Oak Harbor young man, and to this union two children were born, Marvin Case Lang in 1940 and Donna Kay Lang in 1943. Donna died at the age of one month and the couple adopted Carol Joy from the Children’s Home in Seattle. She was as dear as any birth child could be. Frank died in 1956 leaving Alice with her children, ages 10 and 15. She had always wanted to attend college but, because of the Depression years and no financial aid, it was impossible.
In 1957 she enrolled in Skagit Valley College, driving to Mount Vernon each day. There was no branch of the college in Oak Harbor at that time. She graduated as salutatorian of her class and moved to Bellingham for her final two years. She earned a degree in education from Western Washington State University and was hired by the Oak Harbor School District, to work at the high school as a counselor. After two years at the high school Alice was awarded a scholarship to attend Oregon State University, where she ultimately received a master’s degree in counseling and guidance. She returned to Oak Harbor High School and worked there until her retirement in 1976.
Alice married Kenneth Jensen after her graduation from Oregon State University and together they had a home built in Oak Harbor, each selling their original homes. During summer months they traveled to almost every state in the United States, to Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Alice was always a dedicated volunteer and was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church for 87 years. She taught Sunday School there for 25 years starting at age 16 and continued until 1957 when she enrolled in college. She held almost every position, except pastor, at the church. Alice was a 4-H leader for 15 years, served as a Whidbey General Hospital volunteer for five years, on the Community Concert Board and was active in other community functions. She also attended all PTA meetings while her children were in school.
Alice is survived by her husband, Ken Jensen, at their home in Oak Harbor, along with his family. She is also survived by her son Marv Lang of Oak Harbor and daughter and son-in-law Carol and Morris Moser of Kingston, granddaughter Donna Moser with husband Glenn Bjarno and grandson Scott Moser with wife Kirstie, great-granddaughters Ava and Ceclia Moser. She is survived too by brother Bill Case of Oak Harbor and a sister Mildred Sanders of San Diego, Calif., along with many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service to commemorate Alice’s life will be held at Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church Saturday, March 12, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception luncheon at Centennial Hall provided by the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Burley Funeral Chapel.
