Alice Brislin, 92, was born in Wallingford, Vermont, the youngest of five children. Her New England Heritage could be proudly traced to the Revolutionary War and the original Mayflower settlers. She died at Careage of Whidbey, Coupeville, on Dec. 11, 2005.

She enjoyed a long career as a teacher and administrative assistant in colleges and school systems in Vermont, Massachusetts, Alaska and Guam, where she administered a federal program to teach business skills to Pacific Islanders.

A 35-year resident of Oak Harbor, she arrived in 1970 with her husband Joe, who was the director of the USO, now the Armed Forces YMCA. They decided to retire in Oak Harbor and were active in numerous church and community organizations.

She was a beloved unofficial mother to dozens of armed service members and their families during her husband’s overseas postings with the USO. She was a devoted member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church and contributed innumerable hours to its service and support societies. Her social interests embraced activities as diverse as the New England Club, the Circus Fans of America, and numerous bridge and card clubs where her many friends will remember her as an astute and convivial player.

She is survived by sons Joseph Jr., Richard and Tom; daughter Joann; devoted nephew Robert Hardina and niece Julianne Shore; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services were held at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, on Dec. 13 with Rev. Raymond Heffernan officiating. Burial followed at Maple Leaf Cemetery.
