Oak Harbor’s Andy Wyman won the half-marathon at the second annual Race the Reserve in Coupeville Saturday, Aug. 10, and his triumph wasn’t the only success story.
The sponsors of the race, the parents of the Coupeville High School class of 2014, came out winners as well.
Race director Aimee Bishop said, “We had 353 registered racers, which is amazing. From day one I told the team my dream is to have 350. We ordered 350 shirts and medals. I can’t believe we reached that number.”
Last year’s event drew 260.
Wyman won the half marathon over 122 other runners in 1:14:33.7, followed by Mike Callor of Fort Collins, Colo., in 1:16:49.6.
Brian Comer of Sammamish was first out of 116 runners in the 10K in 39:29.4. Coupeville’s James Steller, last year’s half marathon winner, finished second in 41:09.3.
Alex Hill (16:46.6) edged Pete Chenard (16:47.5) for the 5K title out of a field of 116 runners.
(Home towns were not listed with the race results for runners who signed up the morning of the race.)
Bishop was happy with all aspects of the race: “We had an amazing team of parents and seniors that worked really hard to make it all happen. Budu was amazing; they are a wonderful timing company and a pleasure to work with. The weather was amazing, nice and cool to start, then the sun came out.”
Parent Marci Ameluxen, event media cooridinator, said, “Everything went really smoothly thanks to all the hard work of volunteers, many of whom worked late Friday night and started at 5 a.m.”
She said 60 volunteers, including 25 Coupeville High School seniors and some students and parents from the classes of 2013 and 2015, helped out.
Ameluxen added that a core group of about 10 parents put in months of work leading up to the event, and the support of the community business sponsors was outstanding.
“Throughout the day we heard many positive comments from participants, such as what a great course we had, how helpful people are and how beautiful Whidbey Island is,” Ameluxen said. “Some runners were repeats from last year and many said they want to come back next year.”
