Wrestling: 6 Wildcats place in Morin Tournament

Six Oak Harbor wrestlers placed in the top five and the Wildcats finished eighth out of 16 teams at the Graham Morin Memorial Tournament at Bellingham’s Squalicum High School Saturday, Dec. 18.

Six Oak Harbor wrestlers placed in the top five and the Wildcats finished eighth out of 16 teams at the Graham Morin Memorial Tournament at Bellingham’s Squalicum High School Saturday, Dec. 18.

Snohomish won the tournament with 287.5 points. Oak Harbor collected 80.

Brandon Stratton (152 pounds) led the way for the Wildcats by finishing second.

Justin Everett (160) and Kyle Mellow (285) placed third; and Cody Fakkema (119), David Payne (145) and Josh Crebbin (152) finished fifth.

The Wildcats go to the Anacortes Duals Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 10 a.m., then finally compete at home Tuesday, Jan. 4, against Shorewood (5:40) and Shorecrest (7 p.m.).

Two falls and a 9-8 decision sent Stratton into the championship match which he lost 7-0.

Everett wrestled in five matches, all determined by pins. He won his first bout (4:33), lost his second (5:43) and then took three straight (3:47, 4:30, 4:29).

Mellow needed just one win to grab his third-place medal. After losing 5-4, he won in the second round to finish third.

Fakkema won 8-3 then lost by a fall (1:45). He won 16-1 and by forfeit before losing 4-2.

Payne won by a pin (4:45) then lost by one (1:00) before winning 19-4, winning by forfeit and losing 14-0.

Crebbin, like Everett, was involved in five matches all decided by falls. He won (1:19), lost (1:37), won twice (1:29, :45) before dropping the last match (4:29).

Ryuta Meany (135): 5-0, lost by pin (1:05), 0-5.

Brody DeDobbelaere (140); lost by pin (1:00), lost by pin (:55).

Steven Souza (160): won by pin (1:19), 7-9, won by pin (2:51), 1-5.

Collin Higingbotham (171): 1-9, 5-12.

Jeremy Alonzo (189): lost by pin (1:00), lost by pin (3:00).
