A wrecking truck became a wreck itself Sunday when it went over the side of an embankment on a section of Highway 20 a few miles north of Coupeville.

According to Trooper Mark Francis, a spokesman for the Washington State Patrol, the driver of a TJ’s Towing and Driving flatbed hauler was headed southbound on Highway 20 just after Libbey Road at about 2 p.m. when the vehicle drifted onto the right-hand shoulder.

The driver overcorrected and veered across both lanes of the highway before going down a sloped 20-foot embankment, Francis said.

“He went off the northbound shoulder,” Francis said.

The driver suffered no serious injuries in the accident.

The flatbed-truck’s size required that a larger tow truck be called in to haul it up the embankment. It arrived at about 4:30 p.m. and the operation resulted in the closure of both lanes of traffic for about 15 minutes.

Francis said he didn’t know if the driver was cited at the scene, but it he wasn’t, he will likely receive a ticket for “wheels off the roadway.”
