A Coupeville woman struggling with a mental health problem is accused of setting fire to a mattress that was propped up against her house.

Prosecutors charged Erin B. Czarnik, 26, in Island County Superior Court May 18 with first-degree arson and fourth-degree assault.

The woman’s boyfriend reported the incident to police May 15.

The man said that they were trying to get Czarnik a mental evaluation for some time. He said she went to Compass Health several times but wasn’t able to get help she needed.

The man said he was arguing with Czarnik about not getting help when she punched him in the mouth and went outside. He told investigators he smelled something burning a little while later and found that a mattress leaning up against the house was on fire; the man and their baby were inside the couple’s house at the time.

The man said he pulled the mattress away from the house and extinguished the fire with a garden hose.

Czarnik allegedly admitted to burning the mattress, but said she didn’t know why she did it, according to a deputy’s report.

The woman’s hands had blistering, believed to be from the fire, the deputy noted.
