Woman charged with theft of store scanner

Sandi M. Lance, 37, appeared in Island County Superior Court July 28.

An Oak Harbor woman is facing a felony theft charge and potential jail time for allegedly stealing a handheld inventory scanner from a convenience store July 26, according to court documents.

Sandi M. Lance, 37, appeared in Island County Superior Court July 28. The judge found probable cause existed to believe she may have committed the crime of theft in the second degree.

The judge set Lance’s bail at $3,000.

In the afternoon of July 26, an employee at the Ampm store reported to police that a woman stole the scanning device, which was worth $5,000. The employee confronted the woman about the theft, but she denied it and left, a police report states.

An officer reviewed the surveillance video and saw a woman with a prominent chest tattoo pick the scanner off a counter and place it in her bag, the report states. She and another woman drove off in a van.

The next day, an Oak Harbor resident located the van at the Walmart and found a woman matching the description of the thief asleep in the front seat. The woman, identified as Lance, invoked her rights and did not talk to the police, the report states.

The owner of the van arrived and wasn’t happy to learn that the officers seized her van and were applying for a warrant to search it, the officer wrote. An officer later found the scanner inside a flower pot inside the van, the report states.

The owner of the van said she was driving back to Montana.
