An employee of Island County Juvenile Court Services pleaded not guilty to a felony charge for stabbing her husband in the leg, court documents state.

Prosecutors charged Rachel Irvin in Island County Superior Court Oct. 29 with assault in the second degree, a domestic violence crime.

In court Nov. 12, Judge John Linde released Irvin from jail on her personal recognizance. He previously set her bail at $50,000.

Island County Detective John Nieder investigated the Oct. 26 incident on Whitney Drive. In his report, he wrote that three witnesses said that Irvin and her husband were sitting on the couch eating dinner when they started stabbing each other with a steak knife.

The man first stabbed Irvin in the calf with the knife, the report indicates. She got mad, took the knife from him and stabbed at him three times, striking him once in the thigh, the detective wrote.

The knife nicked the man’s femoral artery and he lost a great deal of blood. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle “in critical condition with the possibility of losing his leg or dying of the injury,” Nieder wrote.

A detective noted that both Irvin and her husband appeared to be highly intoxicated, the report states. The victim claimed he stabbed his wife and then stabbed himself, documents indicate.

Island County Superior Court Judges Alan Hancock and Vickie Churchill recused themselves from hearing the case because Irvin was a work crew supervisor at the juvenile detention facility. The judges supervise the juvenile court system.

If convicted of the charge, Irvin would face from three to nine months in jail under the standard sentencing range.
