Woman charged with hitting OH police officer with her car

An Oak Harbor police officer suffered minor injuries when a driver struck him with a car while fleeing arrest Oct. 9, according to court documents.

The suspect, Oak Harbor resident Monica Wittus, 30, also backed into a patrol car and caused significant damage, the police report states.

Prosecutors charged Wittus in Island County Superior Court Oct. 25 with two counts of assault in the second degree and one count of malicious mischief in the second degree.

Prosecutors also charged Wittus on Oct. 25 with possession of methamphetamine in a separate case.

On Oct. 9, two police officers responded to the McDonald’s parking lot in response to a request for a welfare check on a woman who had been sitting in her car for an hour. The officers contacted Wittus, who said she was waiting for a room at a hotel.

The officers discovered that she was wanted on a felony warrant out of Skagit County, according to police reports.

Officer Mel Lolmaugh told Wittus to shut off her car while the warrant was being confirmed.

Instead, Wittus allegedly put the car into reverse and accelerated backward, crashing into his patrol car, the police report states. Wittus then drove forward at a high rate of speed.

Lolmaugh struck the windshield with his flashlight in an attempt to obstruct the driver’s view, he wrote in his report.

Wittus turned toward the two officers, striking Officer Christopher Hutchinson and causing him to fall to the ground, the report states.

Wittus sped through the parking lot and turned northbound on State Highway 20.

Hutchinson was transported to the hospital, where he was treated and released. Lolmaugh suffered a bruised hand, the report states.

In the other case, Wittus called police Jan. 25 to report that a man had collapsed from a possible drug overdose at her home. The man was conscious when police arrived and taken to the hospital.

Officers, however, noticed a glass pipe at the house, which Wittus admitted she used to smoke meth, the report states.
