A 33-year-old former Oak Harbor woman who was charged with assaulting a man she had previously stabbed in the chest agreed to a plea bargain, according to court documents.

Ronalda Tom of Omak pleaded guilty in Island County Superior Court Feb. 19 to violation of a no contact, protection order or restraining order. She was originally charged with the more serious offense of assault in violation of a protection order, a count which could have landed her in prison.

Judge Vickie Churchill went along with the joint sentence recommendation from the defense and prosecution. She sentenced Tom to 365 days in jail with 289 days suspended. Tom received credit for 76 days already served, as well as good time credit.

Also, Churchill ordered Tom to pay $1,217 in fines and fees.

Oak Harbor Police Officer Steve Nordstrand wrote in an affidavit that he responded to a report of a domestic assault at a NE Seventh Avenue apartment Dec. 5. A witness said that Tom punched the victim in the face, hit him numerous times, threatened to kill him and threw things at him, the officer wrote.

Tom had previously been convicted of several domestic assault charges, Nordstrand wrote, including an assault in the third degree conviction for stabbing the man in the chest. In that case, the victim was transported to Harborview Medical Center for treatment of the serious injury.

After the stabbing incident, there was a court order barring Tom from contacting the man.

In both the stabbing and recent case, the alleged victim refused to cooperate with police, court documents show.
