Woman accused of running over her friend with Jeep

Woman accused of driving over friend in Oak Harbor parking lot

An 18-year-old woman was arrested in May for allegedly striking her friend with her car in the Saar’s Market parking lot in Oak Harbor, according to court documents.

Prosecutors charged the woman in Island County juvenile court Sept. 11 with vehicular assault. She was 17 years old at the time of the incident.

It’s unclear from the police report on the case what exactly happened, but several witnesses in the parking lot claimed that the suspect’s Jeep drove over the victim at least three times, the report states.

The driver said she didn’t realize she had hit a person when she was backing up and thought it was a pothole. The victim said she had no memory of what happened, according to the report. The report doesn’t indicate how badly she was hurt, but she was talking when officers arrived. She was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

The driver admitted that she and friends went to the grocery store to steal alcohol, the officer wrote. They left, however, when store employees began following them.

An officer saw a plastic bag of what appeared to be marijuana inside the Jeep, the report states. The driver agreed to do a breath test, which showed she had no alcohol in her system. But based on voluntary field sobriety tests, the officer had the young woman’s blood drawn at the hospital to be tested for drugs, the report states.
