The weary Coupeville High School baseball team ended a busy week and the regular season with a 12-4 loss at Lakewood Saturday, May 3.

That was the week’s only downer as the Wolves won four games leading up to the loss, including 9-4 a Sultan Friday.

In all, Coupeville played five games in six days and the final four consecutively.

The Wolves need to recover quickly with the district tournament beginning at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at Meridian (4-8, 8-11).

Teams will need to win two games in the eight-team, double elimination tournament to advance to tri-district.

After the first-round district games, all others will be played at Blaine’s Pipeline Fields. The second round for Coupeville will be 4 p.m. Thursday, May 8. The tournament concludes Saturday.

“Tired, tired, tired,” said coach Willie Smith in regard to Saturday’s loss to Lakewood (7-10, 8-11). “We ended up with 10 hits, so (I am) pretty happy about that, but I think they were just exhausted and are looking forward to the playoffs this week; not an excuse, just the reality of our week.”

Lakewood took control early, scoring three runs in the first inning and four more in the third.

Ben Etzell went 3-for-4 and Josh Bayne 2-for-3 as the top of the lineup finished 8-for-18.

The difference compared to the the wins earlier in the week, Smith said, was “our lower half didn’t hit the ball like they had been so we didn’t get the run production.”

In the win over Sultan, the Wolves had their “best hitting game of the week,” according to Smith.

The Wolves pounded five extra-base hits and drove three outs to the outfield wall, Smith said.

“We really had great approaches at the plate,” he added.

Jake Tumblin, who entered the game going 6-for-9 in the previous three games, continued his torrid streak by going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

That set Tumblin’s stat sheet for the week at 8-for-12 with three doubles, a home run, eight runs and five stolen bases.

Aaron Trumbull was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBI at Sultan; Etzell finished 2-for-3 with a double and RBI;  Kurtis Smith was 2-for-5 with two RBI; and Bayne went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Korbin Korzan received the start and earned the win, and Wade Schaef pitched one-hit ball over the final three innings.

“It was probably Wade’s best outing of the year, which is great because we will need that type of performance throughout our playoffs,” coach Smith said.

Coupeville finished the conference season with a 9-9 record (10-9 overall) and in fifth place. However, the Wolves were only three games out of first in the tightly packed final standings.
