Taking a peak at the Coupeville football team’s circumstances, it wasn’t the situation an 0-2 team wants to be in for its third game of the season.
The Wolves not only had to hit the road for a long trip to Tacoma, but they had to face a top 10 ranked B-11 opponent Tacoma Baptist on its home field.
It doesn’t exactly sound like the medicine to fix a losing skid.
It didn’t matter for the Wolves on Saturday, however, as they stepped onto Tacoma Baptist’s turf and dismantled the Crusaders, 36-0 for their first win of 2005.
“We needed that win really bad,†CHS coach Ron Bagby said. “It is nice to head into league on a winning track — I think this will really help us.â€
Coupeville jumped on Tacoma Baptist right away in the first quarter, as senior quarterback Mike Bagby connected with junior tight end Tony Prosser for a 3-yard touchdown pass.
Senior running back J.J. Marti then broke into the end zone in the second quarter on a 3-yard run, that along with a 2-point conversion gave the Wolves a 15-0 halftime lead.
Marti, who rushed for 111 yards on 21 carries, started things off in the third quarter equally as strong as he scored his second touchdown of the game for a 22-0 lead.
Junior fullback Casey Larson broke things open for good in the third, running straight up the middle for a 90-yard touchdown run.
“He doesn’t get too many touches, but boy does he have the yards per carry,†Bagby said.
Sophomore Clay Hughes tacked on one more score in the fourth, running the ball over the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown.
Although the offense was sharp, Bagby was also extremely pleased with his defense, which got a shut out for the first time quite some time.
“I don’t even know when the last time was,†he said. “It’s been a long time.â€
Coupeville is now 1-2 in non-league competition. The Wolves begin their league season at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 23 at Concrete.
