Port Townsend’s early lead didn’t last long as the Coupeville High School softball team walloped the visiting Redskins 14-5 Saturday, March 23.

Port Townsend jumped on the Wolves right away, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Undaunted, Coupeville did the Redskins three times better, scoring nine to start the rout.

The Wolves scored all nine runs in the first before the second out was recorded. Four walks and singles by MaKayla Bailey, Haley Sherman, Bree Messner and Madeline Strasburg did much of the early damage, then Madi Roberts finished the big inning by lashing a two-run triple.

Coupeville added three runs in the third and built a 14-3 lead heading into the fifth.

Bailey led the offensive assault with two hits, including a home run, and pitched the final two innings, recording two strikeouts.

Messner finished with two hits, two RBI and two runs; Strasburg was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run; Hailey Hammer rapped two hits and scored two runs; Roberts added three walks and two runs to her triple; and Sherman and Maria Rockwell each singled and scored a run.

Rockwell earned the pitching win, working the first five innings for four strikeouts, four hits and two earned runs.

The Wolves (1-0, 2-0) entertain Archbishop Murphy (0-3, 0-5) at 4 p.m. Monday, March 25.
