McKayla Bailey smacked a first-inning home run to get thing started for the Coupeville High School softball team in its 17-7 six-inning win at Port Townsend Friday, May 1.

The Wolves scored six runs in the first inning and then tacked on runs in each following frame to boost their Olympic League record to 4-3 (5-8 overall). The Redhawks fell to 0-6 (0-10).

Coupeville hosts Bellevue Christian (9-2) at 4 p.m. Monday, May 4, in a nonleague game and then finishes its conference schedule this week. Chimacum (4-1, 7-5) visits at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, and then Coupeville goes to Klahowya (4-1, 7-5) at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, May 7.

Singles by Lauren Rose, Hailey Hammer, Kailey Kellner and Jasmine Melena (in her first varsity at bat), three errors and Bailey’s home run helped the Wolves jump ahead 6-0 in the top of the first inning.

Hammer tripled in the second inning as the Wolves scored two more runs.

In a two-run third inning, a double by Tiffany Briscoe and singles by Katrina McGranahan and Bailey led the charge.

Rose singled in a run in the fourth inning.

A double by Hammer highlighted a two-run fifth inning.

Hits by Rose, McGranahan and Kellner fueled a four-run sixth.

Hammer and Rose ended the day with three hits each; Hammer added five RBI, and Rose had two.

Briscoe, McGranahan, Bailey and Kellner each had two hits. Kellner drove in five runs and McGranahan three.

The Wolves had a strong defensive game, according to coach Deanna Rafferty, and pitchers Bailey and McGranahan were “solid.”

Rafferty added she was “incredibly proud” of Melena for her hit in her initial plate appearance, and she said she liked how Jae LeVine “stood her ground” in batting left handed for the first time.
