In recent years team wins and Coupeville track and field weren’t used often in the same sentence.

“I don’t ever recall winning a meet in my time here,” third-year head coach Greg Oldham said.

That has changed in 2005 as a large number of talented athletes have turned the program around.

The Wolf boys recorded their second team victory in three meets, edging out Northwest A/B powerhouse Mount Vernon Christian and five other teams in Coupeville Friday afternoon.

The Wolves earned 162 points to the 159 of the Hurricanes. Concrete (82), Cedar Park Christian (32), Grace Academy (23), Friday Harbor (19) and Snohomish Country Christian (2) rounded out the field.

Leading the way for the boys was senior Andrew Moon, who won the 100, 200 and anchored the first-place 400-meter relay team.

“He was just having his typical day,” Oldham said.

Moon headlined the short sprints with wins, but the Wolves cleaned up in the 100 and 200. Chris Hutchinson and J.J. Marti tied for second in the 100, while Riley Fishburn took fourth. Marti and Fishburn also finished third and fourth respectively in the 200.

“That was pretty impressive,” Oldham said.

Other first place finishers for the Wolves on Friday, included Trevor Tucker in the high jump and Jaren Tso in the 3200.

Freshman Kyle King took part in the most exciting race on Friday, facing off against the league’s best distance runner, Jeff Schloemer of MVC, in the 1600. King kicked it in with about 300 yards to go, taking a slight lead. The veteran runner finally overtook the freshman, however, in the final 100 meters.

“Kyle had a nice race,” Oldham said. “He made it interesting.”

Fourteen other athletes placed in the top six to earn points for the Wolves — something that has impressed Oldham all season.

“We’ve had 21 different kids place this year, there’s been some year’s where there hasn’t even been 21 kids turnout,” he said.

The Coupeville girls also found success on Friday, but came in second. The Wolves, who have won one of three meets this year, earned 94 team points, finishing behind Mount Vernon Christian (166.5). Snohomish Country Christian (58), Friday Harbor (41), Concrete (32), Grace Academy (30.5), Cedar Park Christian (10) rounded out the competition.

Corinne Gaddis led the way for the CHS girls, taking the team’s only first place in the long jump and nabbing third in the high jump and 100 meters.

Janiece Jenkins, who was plagued with injury most of last season, also had a huge day for the Wolves. She finished second in the 400, tied for third in the 100 and finished fourth in the 200 and triple jump.

Kristina Morris also earned points for her team taking third in the 100 high hurdles and second in the shot put, an event she only tried two days prior.

“For only trying it a couple of days before the meet she did a real nice job,” Oldham said.

The Coupeville track and field team is at Mount Vernon Christian tomorrow, April 21. They have one more multi-team meet the following week before hosting the league championships, Thursday, May 5.

From what he has seen so far this season, Oldham is excited about the possibilities.

“It’s real nice because with the way the kids are performing we should take a bunch to state,” he said. “We have never taken more than two to state since I’ve been here.”
