Wolves play well but fall to Darrington | Volleyball

Effective passing and serving kept Coupeville close, but the host Darrington High School volleyball team eventually pulled away for a 3-1 win Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Effective passing and serving kept Coupeville close, but the host Darrington High School volleyball team eventually pulled away for a 3-1 win Wednesday, Sept. 30.

After the Wolves squeaked out a 25-23 win in the opening set, the Loggers returned the favor by taking the second game by the same score.

From there, Darrington (2-3) secured the non-league match with 25-17, 25-19 wins.

“We had solid passing and serving throughout the match,” Coupeville coach Breanne Smedley said.

The passing game was led by Valen Trujillo.

“Valen had her best game of the season so far,” Smedley said. “She was focused, reading well and making amazing plays in the back row. She was a solid constant for our team.”

Trujillo finished with 18 digs and a 2.6 passing average. The team posted a 2.09 passing mark.

Trujillo also paced the service attack, hitting 100 percent of her chances.

In all, the Wolves nailed 90 percent of their serves.

“In game three, Katrina (McGranahan) brought us back from a three-point deficit to a three-point lead, serving five aces in a row,” Smedley said. “Sydney (Autio), Katrina, Lauren (Rose), Payton (Aparicio), and Valen did a great job putting the pressure on from the service line.”

The Wolves’ downfall, Smedley said, was hitting.

“Hitters struggled to execute, giving away multiple points on errors,” she said.

McKenzie Bailey finished with eight kills and three blocks, while Autio had six aces and 12 assists.

Overall, the Wolves “did a great job battling for every point and closing leads by serving though,” according to Smedley.

Coupeville (1-4) meets Chimacum (2-1) in a non-league match at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, in Coupeville.
