After a two-match skid, the Coupeville High School tennis team resumed its winning ways with a 5-2 triumph at Granite Falls Tuesday, April 9.

Because Granite Falls (0-2, 1-6) is a 2A school, the teams played four singles and three doubles matches, the format for schools 2A and larger. The 1A Wolves generally play only two singles and three doubles matches.

Regardless of the setup, Coupeville dominated the match.

The Wolves were especially tough in singles, sweep all four contests: 1, Amanda d’Almeida won 6-2, 6-3; 2, Allie Hanigan won 6-2, 6-0; 3, Iris Ryckaert won 6-2, 6-1; Emily Gallahar won 6-4, 6-1.

In third doubles, McKenzie Bailey and Sydney Autio won 6-2, 6-3.

The Wolves dropped the other doubles matches: 1, Holly Craggs/Julia Myers lost 7-6(9-7), 6-2; 2, Breanna Koym/Maureen Rice lost 6-1, 7-5.

Coach Ken Stange said the expanded format made it “fun for us.”

He added, “I had no idea what to expect from Granite this season. They have been tough on us over the past few years.”

To accommodate the format, Stange said he “decided to break up some doubles teams to give us a chance at singles. The girls delivered.”

D’Almeida’s match featured many long rallies, but the senior “found ways to get to the net and end points,” Stange said.

Both Hanigan and Ryckaert won “with ease,” according to Stange. “It was great to get Iris out on the singles court because she has fabulous technique on both sides.”

Gallahar’s effort was “the biggest surprise,” Stange said. “This was far and away the best match Emily has ever played. I am very proud of her effort.”

He said Bailey and Autio “played very well together” in Autio’s varsity debut.

Coupeville (5-2) plays home matches at 3:30 p.m. with Chimacum Thursday and Lakewood Friday.
