Wolves headed in right direction

With the level of experience her team possess, Coupeville boys soccer coach Melissa Martenak knew it was just a matter of time before the wins started coming.

Suffering losses in their first two non-league games, the Wolves finally got a victory on Tuesday night by defeating Tacoma Baptist 3-1 at Mickey Clark Field.

“We’re happy with it, but I expect more, so that’s what it comes down to,” Martenak said.

Coupeville initially fell behind in the 19th minute after the Crusaders were fouled in the penalty box. Tacoma Baptist forward Daniel Labeck capitalized on a free kick, nailing the open shot past goalkeeper Will Butela.

It didn’t take long, however, for Coupeville to work its way back in the game.

The Wolves kept heat on the Crusaders’ defense, letting loose on 16 shots in the first half to the seven of Tacoma Baptist.

Senior midfielder Micah Einterz capitalized on one of those shots in the 26th minute, taking a loose ball from about 20 yards out and nailing it past the goalkeeper into the right corner of the net.

Einterz wasn’t done there.

With roughly 6:00 remaining in the first half, he took a bouncing ball off the foot of his own goalkeeper, Butela, and slid a shot past the Crusader goalie, who came out too far on the play.

Coupeville added on to its lead in the second half when junior midfielder Tom Rogers tapped in a cross from teammate Greg Motett.

The Wolves managed to keep the offensive pressure on in the second half, while staying strong on defense.

CHS out-shot Tacoma 27-11 for the game. Butela had six saves in the first half and sophomore Josh Adams had three in the second half.

Even with all the shots the Wolves took, Martenak would like to see her team put more in the back of the net — along with crisper passing.

“We need to make sure we emphasize that so when we do play those harder teams we’re not caught on the back of our heels and that we’re able to attack the right way,” she said.

CHS 3, SCHS 0

The Wolves kept their winning ways going Thursday night, defeating league opponent Shoreline Christian 3-0 on the road.

Senior Mike Duke put in two goals for Coupeville and freshman Geoff Wacker scored his first career high school goal.

The Wolves play their next game against non-league Snohomish County Christian at 1 p.m., today, Sept. 17 at Mickey Clark Field.
