Wolves hammer LaConner

Larsen scores three TDs, Hughes two in 48-6 win

Coupeville put on an offensive and defensive football showcase in its first game of the season on Friday, routing LaConner 48-6 in a non league game.

The Wolves rolled up 421 yards in total offense including 323 on the ground.

Meanwhile, the tough Coupeville defense held LaConner to minus eight yards on the ground and just 42 yards through the air.

“We jumped on them pretty good right from the start of the game,” coach Ron Bagby said. “We were up 21-0 after the first quarter and 35-0 at half time.”

Casey Larsen had a big night for the Wolves rushing for 133 yards on just seven carries and scoring three touchdowns.

The senior running back opened the Wolves’ scoring finding pay dirt on a 53-yard screen pass from quarterback James Smith in the first quarter. He added a second touchdown on a 1-yard run in the second period to make the score 28-0.

In the third quarter, Larsen went 74 yards off tackle for his third touchdown of the game.

Junior Clay Hughes scored twice on runs of 23 and 1 yard, and Smith connected with Tony Prosser for 32-yards and a touchdown in the second quarter.

Hughes was the Wolves’ workhorse in the game, carrying the ball 17 times for 69 yards.

Ben Lawrence scored Coupeville’s final touchdown on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter.

“We got to play a bunch of kids and that was a good thing for us,” Bagby said.

“Smith threw the ball pretty well, he was 5-for-7 with two touchdowns and no interceptions.”

Defensively, Prosser and Lawrence led the team in tackles with seven each and Jordan Emerson had six. Kyle Wilcox intercepted a pass.

“LaConner has a pretty young team this year and they graduated a lot of players,” Bagby said. “Still, I was pleased with the way we played in our first game of the year. It was a very good way for us to begin the season.”

Coupeville returns to action on Friday hosting Concrete. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Clark Stadium.
