Coupeville High School baseball team’s 4-2 over Lakewood Monday, April 29, at Robert Sherman Field, thanks in a large part to Josh Bayne, was more than a check in the win column.

The Wolves knocked off Lakewood, which had beaten them twice earlier this season; sewed up third place in the Cascade Conference; locked up the No. 1 seed  among 1A league schools heading into the district tournament; and earned a home game in the first round of the playoffs. And if that is not enough, Coupeville snared third place and the top seed at the expense of rival South Whidbey.

The Wolves begin district play at home at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, against Lynden Christian.

Win or lose, Coupeville plays at 1 p.m. Thursday at Blaine’s Pipeline Fields in the double-elimination, eight-team tournament.

Bayne went 3-for-3, including a home run, and pitched a compete-game six-hitter in the win over Lakewood.

Coach Willie Smith said, “Phenomenal outing by Josh Bayne, who dominated on the mound and the plate. He went the distance, with just a bit of a hiccup in the second inning but quickly erased that by hitting a two-run shot in the bottom of the frame to give us the lead that he never relinquished.”

After giving up the two second-inning runs, Bayne allowed only two hits the rest of the way and none after the fifth inning. He received help from his defense, including gems by Drew Chan and Wade Schaef.

Second baseman Chan converted a line-drive double play in the fourth, and centerfielder Schaef gunned down a runner at third in the fifth.

Consecutive singles by Ben Etzell, Morgan Payne and Jake Tumblin gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead in the first.

After Lakewood went up 2-1 in the top of the second, Bayne blasted his two-run shot in the bottom half to put his team back on top.

The Wolves scored again in the third when Tumblin was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Kyle Bodamer’s base hit.

Kurtis Smith added two hits for Coupeville.
