The Coupeville boys basketball team came out firing on all cylinders in their 62-40 victory over the Granite Falls Tigers last Friday.
The Wolves began the game with a 20-1 run, including a 16-1 first quarter, in which they dominated on both sides of the court. Granite Falls was never able to recover from the Wolves’ opening blitz, getting its first and only point of the opening period when they hit a free throw with less than a second remaining.
“Every win is a nice win, we played well at times and responded well when they came back. It was a great start,” said head coach Randy King about the non-conference victory.
The Wolves began the game by playing solid half-court defense, forcing Granite into taking bad shots. The Tigers were able to make a run in the second quarter after Coupeville began to full-court press.
“They came back in the second quarter like gangbusters,” said King. “We couldn’t press them. They made some easy baskets and made it closer.”
King believed that his team was helped by playing in the Northwest A jamboree last week. The Wolves picked up two wins in the mini-games held in LaConner and were ready from the opening tipoff.
The Wolves got off to a hot start offensively when junior guard Brad Sherman hit a three-pointer to open the game and senior Chris Good put in a lay-in on the Wolves’ next possession to give them a 5-0 early lead. The Tigers were never able to get that close again.
“Obviously we kept clicking,” King said.
Good, the Wolves’ main threat in the paint, had 15 points at the half before foul trouble kept him on the bench for most of the second half. Sean Callahan was able to fill in admirably with Good on the bench, chipping in six second-half points and grabbing a team-high 13 rebounds.
“After Chris had to go to the bench, Sean was steady in the post for us,” said King. “We got strong guard play from Jim Meek, who had a big fourth quarter. Everyone who suited up got to play.”
Good and Sherman were the Wolves’ leading scorers with 15 points apiece. Callahan finished the game with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while senior Geoff Hageman contributed 8 boards as well.
Alex Emery led the Tigers with 10 points.
The Wolves played Seattle Christian last night. Seattle Christian has been a state 1A finalist the past two seasons, winning the game two years ago and losing in double overtime last year.
“They have a strong program,” said King on Monday. “It should be a tough little test for our guys.” Results will appear in Saturday’s Whidbey News-Times.
