The Coupeville High School tennis team began a four-matches-in-four-days stretch with a 3-2 nonleague loss at Friday Harbor Monday, April 21.
The Wolves received wins in first singles from Allie Hanigan (6-1, 1-6, 10-7) and in third doubles from Micky LeVine and Valen Trujillo (6-1, 5-1). The second set of the third doubles match was cut short so Coupeville could catch the ferry.
Coach Ken Stange said Hanigan’s match was “weird.” Each player dominated a set, and then Hanigan prevailed in a close third set.
“Allie is my toughest player, and she never gives in,” Stange said. “She earned player of the match honors.”
The win was Hanigan’s third straight, raising her season record to 5-2.
Stange called the doubles win a “fun little match.”
“Valen and Micky are a pair of Energizer bunnies, so to speak,” he added. “They were flying around the court, chasing down loose balls. The other team didn’t even know what hit them.”
Sydney Autio stepped into the second singles slot with Jacki Ginnings sick and lost 6-1, 6-0.
“Sydney is developing a singles game after missing the beginning of the season due to injury,” Stange said.
In first doubles, Sydney Aparicio and Samantha Martin fell 6-1, 7-5.
The pair played well in the second set, Stange said, and are “developing improved games” in their first season of varsity tennis.
In second doubles, Wynter Thorne and McKenzie Bailey lost 6-3, 6-3.
The Wolves won three JV doubles matches: Ana Luvera/Ivy Luvera won 6-4; Haleigh Deasy/Jazmine Franklin won 6-1; and Bree Daigneault/McKenzie Bailey won 6-0.
Coupeville (1-2, 3-4) plays 3:30 p.m. matches at home with South Whidbey (3-0, 5-2) Tuesday, April 22, and Lakewood (0-4, 0-4) Thursday, April 23, with a trip to Granite Falls 1-3, 1-6) in between.
