It was quite a week for the Coupeville basketball program.

Two Wolves, junior Mike Bagby and senior Lexie Black, won respective male and female Northwest A/B Player of the Year awards as voted on by league coaches.

This was the first time a boy and a girl have received league MVPs for Coupeville in the same year since Chris Good and Brianne King in 2001.

The award was particularly special for Bagby, a 6-foot-3 junior who averaged just over 20 points and six rebounds per game.

“I thought I had a chance, but I wasn’t really expecting it because I am only a junior and there’s a lot of good players they could have picked that won more games,” he said.

Bagby was quick, however, to credit the award to the support of his teammates.

“My teammates helped me out a lot because they’re the ones that are giving me the ball and making me look good,” he said.

Although his numbers were no doubt significant, CHS head coach Randy King praised the little things Bagby did over the season.

“He brings us such leadership on the floor,” King said. “And defensively, we were our best when we put him on the other teams’ best player.”

After feeling she deserved recognition last year, Black was elated coaches voted for her this time around.

“The Player of the Year award feels really good because I put in the work,” she said. “I’m just really happy about it.”

Through the regular season the 6-foot-2 post averaged 11 points, nine rebounds and five blocks per game, helping the Wolves to a 13-7 regular-season record, a second place Northwest A/B finish and an automatic state berth.

Other Coupeville basketball players named to the Northwest A/B All-League team included senior Andrew Mouw as an honorable mention for the boys and seniors Taniel Lamb and Whitney Clark as second-team members for the girls. Junior Brittany Black was named to the team as an honorable mention.
