A record breaking season by the Oak Harbor football team netted big rewards from the Western Conference North.

The Wildcats, who made their deepest run into the state playoffs before losing to Skyline in the quarterfinals, earned all-league recognition at 13 positions.

Two players, junior Will Hunter and senior Gabe Vest, were named to first team offense and defense.

Hunter, a 6-foot-4, 275 pound tackle, was key to the Wildcat offense gaining over 2,800 yards on the ground and 1,350 yards through the air. He also had 42 tackles, nine of which were for loss, and four sacks on defense.

“He’s one of those guys that plays like a senior,” OHHS head coach Dave Ward said. “You sometimes forget he’s a junior.

We really rely on him for opening holes up for the running game and then closing holes up on the other side of the ball.”

Vest, a 5-foot-7, 165 pound running back/linebacker, ended the season with a team-high 148 carries for 1,080 yards and 16 TDs. He also had an outstanding year on defense with 74 tackles, 12 of which were for loss, and four interceptions.

“His play on both sides of the ball, his leadership, is really respected by other people,” Ward said.

Other first team selections included senior linebacker Blake Bebee and senior defensive end Brian Wandell.

Wandell also earned second team tight end, while senior wide receiver Cameron Kays and junior quarterback Marshall Lobbestael were named second team selections.

Honorable mention recipients were senior Tyson Boon (T/DE), junior Matt Johnston (G/LB), senior Josh Yoder (FB/LB), senior Keith Lokkins (K) and junior Brendan Kays (WR/FS).

VOLLEYBALL

The Oak Harbor volleyball team (4-4, 8-6) may have missed the district playoffs by one game, but they still earned respect at all-league selection time.

Seniors Kyrstal Rousselle and Jennifer Muzzall were both named to the first team as hitters.

Senior Miranda Theil was honored as a second team hitter, while senior Ashley Kingma was named to the second team as a setter.

SWIMMING

OHHS junior Julia Marriott earned all-league in two swimming events for her participation in the 4A state meet.

Marriott was recognized in the 200 individual medley, where she finished 15th in the state, and the 100 butterfly, where she took 16th in the state.

As the only member of the Wildcat swim team to go to state, Marriott earned three points and a 52nd overall finish for Oak Harbor.

SOCCER

There were no first or second team selections for Oak Harbor’s 4-11-1 soccer team, but the Wildcats received eight honorable mentions — five of which are underclassmen and will return next season.

Midfielder Gia Dimatteo, midfielder Abigail Pruss and defender Meghan Newsome were the seniors who received awards, while junior forward Bridgette Walker, junior midfielder Ashli Melcher, sophomore forward Brooke Dewitt, sophomore goalkeeper Sam Shulock and freshman defender Sarah Newsome were also honored.

CROSS COUNTRY

Kyle King, a Coupeville sophomore, was the only member of Oak Harbor’s cross country to earn first team honors. King, who spent his first year on the Wildcat team, placed 109th out of 157 racers at the 4A state meet.

Others earning second team honors were seniors David Marriott, Henry Vasquez and Josh Dix.
