Whidbey Marathon weekend arrives

More than 2,000 runners and walkers will hit island roads this weekend as Oak Harbor hosts the 10th Annual Whidbey Island Marathon and accompanying activities. Coordinator Tamra Sipes expects family members and spectators to swell the number of visitors to 5,000 for the weekend’s events.

Today’s 5K fun run/walk starts the string of events at 9 a.m. at Flintstone Park.

The Event Expo will follow from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at North Whidbey Middle School.

The marathon begins Sunday at 7:30 a.m. at Cornet Bay near Deception Pass.

The half-marathon takes off Sunday at 8 a.m. from North Whidbey Middle School and will be followed at 8:05 a.m. by the start of the half-marathon walk.

The post-event celebration begins at 10 a.m. at Windjammer Park. Half-marathon awards will be presented at 11 a.m. and the marathon awards at 11:30 a.m..

Although most roads will be open during the event, there will be several closures to vehicle traffic Sunday.

Scenic Heights will be closed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Whidbey Avenue, east of Glencoe Drive, and Regatta Drive, between SE Fourth and NE Taftson, will be closed from 7:45 to 9 a.m.

Motorists are asked to use caution on North Whidbey roads this weekend. The state patrol and local law enforcement agencies will be guiding traffic to help traffic flow and protect race participants.
